Dinosaur TV Week
Here are some highlights of U.S. national television
programming concerning dinosaurs, other prehistoric
animals, and the scientific discussion of evolution,
from high art to low trash and (theoretically) back
again, all times Eastern (check local listings to
confirm):
Wednesday, March 1
American Movie Classics, 4:00am
Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla
Yes, another American Movie Classic, right up there
with IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and FIVE EASY PIECES. This
is probably the worst of the new Japanese Godzilla
pictures. It's not just bad -- it's frighteningly
bad. "Godzilla cells" mature in space (DON'T ASK!)
and a preposterous, new-agey looking Godzilla with
crystals growing out of its shoulders comes to combat
the humdrum terrestrial-variety Godzilla. Why? Well,
I'm not certain.
Friday, March 3
American Movie Classics, 10:30pm (rebroadcast 2:05am)
The Land that time Forgot
WWI U-Boat with Allied prisoners (who periodically
take control of the boat to break the tedium) sails to
an icy island with cavemen and giant plastic
dinosaurs. For you Doug McClure fans out there, and
you know who you are. (Admit it, Kirkland.)
Saturday, March 4
Disney Channel, 3:35am
Water Birds
Reportedly beautiful short film about extant water
dinosaurs.
Sunday, March 5
Discovery Channel, 9:30am
Bonehead Detectives of the Paleoworld
Kid's show about paleontology. This episode: "Dino
Diner" -- what fossil dung says about dinosaur diet.
Discovery Channel, 11:00am
The Ultimate Guide
"T. rex"
Hour-long documentary highlighting current theories
concerning the most famous predatory dinosaur.
Don't forget Sadie Hawkins Day, gals -- snag that
sucker!
