I know that many varanids (_V.bengalensis, albigularis, salvadorii_, etc) have
the retracted nares, but I don't know of any others. As for why these guys
have it, perhaps for giving the snout more room to go into the carcass of a
prey animal. I suppose this excuse wouldn't work too well with sauropods
though :)
