The following truths about nesting avians seem to me to be also relevant
to non-avians:"Losses tend to be heavy among species that nest on the
ground (in which the sitting hen is sometimes taken too), somewhat less
heavy among species that build open nests among shrubs and trees, and
lighter still among species that build open nests in shrubs and trees, and
lighter still among species that use more protected sites, such as tree
cavities or cliff ledges."
