Re: [dinosaur] Longest sauropod rib

I seem to recall that there is an SV-POW! post on this (I'm sure Mike Taylor can send you said link). There are monstrous fragments out there, but the biggest complete rib I have ever personally seen is over 274 cm from an Apatosaurus(?) at the MOR.

Good day to all listmembers, I would like to ask what is the longest sauropod rib on record? I recall seeing reference for a 306 cm long rib in _Supersaurus vivanae_, but there are probably fragmentary remains of even longer ribs? How long/thick could possibly be an Argentinosaurus rib? Thank you in advance! Tom

The Sauropoda have been considered as the least specialized of the Dinosauria, and in many respects this is doubtless true, but in its adaptation for the application of those mechanical principles which combine maximum strength with minimum weight and increased surface for muscular attachment, the vertebral column of Diplodocus exhibits a remarkable degree of specialization, unsurpassed if not unequaled by other vertebrates. - J.
