You'd have to explain to people why crocodilians are reptiles, but their 
closest living relatives 
(birds) aren't, and neither were their closest extinct relatives (dinosaurs).

Redefining 'reptile' to be a vague physical description is like taking a set 
backwards to the 'bad old 
days', when terms like 'pachyderm' wreaked havok.
