IIRC:
>From the Roman name  (I think) of the Spotted Hyena,
which in turn is from Lat. croc- (-us, -î; m.: 
"saffron" (the color, like on the Indian flag) which
in turn from Gr. croco(?) "saffron" (the flower), +
Lat. -uta -> "she the saffron-colored one"
