How about a tail with an easily removed end, similar
to that of some modern lizards?  Such a feature might
be discernible in the vertebrae.

It _would_ be discernible in the vertebrae -- and has not been found in any archosaur so far.

Oh, as for swinging the neck for defense -- giraffes have up to 5 horns, no known sauropod skull shows anything comparable... :-/
