Well, the way I understand it, the first dinosaurs that could fly were
Cretaceous era birds.  Other therapods came close but never quite took to
the air.

What else besides flight and insulation would dinosaurs have evolved
feathers for?

(Blue Guy and Green Guy take a break from climbing around their cage, which
they vastly prefer to flying, to comb meticulously through their thick even
coats of short, furlike feathers.)
