I just want to add here that EVERYONE gets grants turned down. Name a 
paleontologist (heck, *any* scientist) whose applied for
grants, and they've had some of their applications turned down. This doesn't 
mean that the project wasn't worth funding, but only
that given the very limited resources for research science, and paleontology 
within that, that not all projects can be funded in a
given year. Or decade. Or lifetime.
