I'm with Ken. I like both hand-done art and the cgi stuff.
Though each has its pros and cons, there is plenty of room for both.
Almost all the problems I've seen with commercial cgi work are related to available manhours and deadlines. The artists themselves could not be more cooperative.


The same holds for the hand-done artists I've worked with. John Sibbick, John Conway, and (I hope to someday have the opportunity to work with) Dan Varner, among others.

Among animatronics/sculpture folks, Hall Train is awe inspiring. So are Greg Paul and John Conway. And Wann Langston, Jr. does clay sculptures with so much personality that you expect them to start moving their eyes around.

Personally I like the result and I strongly suspect that many more on the DML do to, but have been keeping a low profile so as not to be criticized or be thought of as "uncool." Many of the negative comments so far are really minor and the similar criticisms can be made of traditional art too:
