Linnaean Terms
Because we've referred to Linnaean terms so often, I thought
it beneficial to list them. Notice that they are descriptive,
valuing incontrovertible aspects visible to, yes, a traveler
on horseback. And not obviously the result of opinion. Insight
works behind the scenes, to identify and correct for convergences,
etc.
This system tells me that observation is true, that what anyone
can see is significant, that nature follows patterns and consistencies
which can be discovered. To me, this proves the value of science.
An alternative based on fungible opinion is tentative by definition,
and implies the arcane, the property of the initiate.
Also, some people like to live in old houses, some in brand new
dwellings. I'm more satisfied in a place with character before
my arrival.
So, yes, part of preference is emotional, based on connotations.
But when order is formulated not by nature but by people (evolution
happened as it did, however unknown the specific events; this
is about naming), I think it acceptable to consider the emotional
response produced.
Quoting (finally):
As an example, consider a classification of butterfly weed, a
species of plants native to the roadsides and fields of eastern
North America. The Linnean classification for this plant is:
Kingdom: Plantae (all plants)
Class: Angiospermae (all flowering plants)
Order: Gentianales (all flowers that have united petals and elaborate
stigmas)
Family: Asclepiadaceae (all plants that have an elaborate structure
of fused stamens and stigmas in the flowers)
Genus: Asclepia (milkweeds)
Species: tuberosa (distinguished by its tuberous roots and orange-red
flowers)
