Arboreality and Utility of Climbing: Not the Same Thing

Hello list,

Vertical running does not require a tree. You can use a cliff-face, or a
simple rock spur,
instead of a tree trunk, and gain the same effect as with a tree. Arboreality
in this case should
be spearated from the idea of climbing a tree trunk. Arboreality properly
provides for life-styles
spent within the tree, as in branch-to-branch, etc.. Tree-trunk climbing is
easily within the
scope of the functional concept of vertical running without ever involving the
idea of feather
development, as well, as it may have been a driving phase in the development of
the flight stroke.
Feathers were probably present before the first expression of vertical running.
However, I am to
understand the paper is in prep, or press, so maybe we shall "wait for the
paper".
