Re: Rapetosaurus stuff
Perhaps the migration route used by Alamosaurus leaving Asia was more
upland, and thus we don't have a record of them in Canada or Northern US
because they lived in habitats that did not cater well to fossils being
left behind. IIRC, I seem to remember reading of a group of lizards that
also lived in the southwest at that time that had more in common with
lizards from Central Asia than the rest of North America. I suspect the
only reason we don't have sauropods in Canada, ect. is because of
enviromental and habitat differences.<
The North Horn Formation here in Utah is thought to be large, vegitated
floodplains during the late K. I believe (though I am no expert on northern
latest K environs) that it would be somewhat similar, environmentally
(vegitated flood plain with big rivers) to the Hell Creek. So, the question
would then be "Why did titanosaurs, if they were coming from Asia, avoid
vegitated floodplains in the northern part of NA, but settle in vegitated
floodplains in southern NA?" To me, that wouldn't make much sense for the
animals to do that. Personally, the idea of NA titanosaurs coming from Asia
would make more sense if we had any evidence of any titanosaurs north of
Utah.
