Perhaps the youth of today who are contemplating a future in paleontology
should think outside the box a bit and consider programs at Arizona State
and elsewhere that are trying to examine the geology and exobiology of
planets other than Earth. After all, I don't know of a single
paleontologist who was consulted prior to publication by geophysicists of
possible microfossil remains found a few year ago in a Martian meteorite. It
seems to me that the science of paleontology, if not paleontologists, have a
lot to offer in this field when its time comes. It also seems that the
debate about microbial life on Mars got off on a limp start due to the
absence of participation by paleontologists.
Of course, there's probably a lot more bones to dig up here on Earth.
