Ah, I stop reading mail for a couple of days and I almost miss an ankie
discussion on the old 'Theropod List'. :)
While I read posts that discussed ankie's flat, rounder bodies acting like
scute-covered surf boards, I don't recall anything on bloating. It seems
that ankies and nodosaurs would make great floation devices after death-lots
of room for gasses to build up.
It could have simply died around water and the carcass found it's way in.
I can picture ankies attracted to water holes like elephants and rinos- to
roll around in the mud or cool off in the shallows. Carting around all that
armor must have been a drag (har har) in the heat.
