Years ago a co-worker's daughter wanted to be an oceanographer.  She had
worked since high school, taking all the courses and providing as much free
labor as she could.  Finally came the day when she applied to Woods Hole.  She
was high on the waiting list.  Her mother told me that she had no idea what
the rest of her life could possibly be about.
May I suggest that budding paleontologists also consciously work on a back-up
plan.
