I'd really recommend Alan Feduccia's "O&E of Birds". Controversial, yes, but
as a tool to point you in lots of different directions, a pretty good
cornerstone. I read it as "Hmmm. I wonder why he said that? Where can I go,
what can I read, to learn more and decide whether I agree or not." etc.

Kind of expensive ... amazon.com lists it for 55 smackerals. Myself I always
check it out from the friendly local liberry.
