"While I agree with almost all of these comments, especially about library
research, remember that all teens (and adults, for that matter) do not have
access to the same resources. There was no way that my parents could have
purchased multiple books (or even one, for that matter) that cost $100.
Luckily I had a great local library, but many people do not. It can take a
really long time to get a book like _The Dinosauria_ through interlibrary
loan. Many urban colleges have become restrictive with library resources."

Just an addendum to all this: while it is true that public
libraries, with a combination of budget cuts and division via branching,
have fewer resources _per_ branch than in the past, making it difficult to
obtain some books, a lot of book stores, notably Barnes & Noble and
Border's, plus other, local, non-chain bookstores, have become the next
best thing to a library by providing great places to sit down and browse
books for hours (although you can't check 'em out) and have a cup of coffee
at the same time -- one needs to neither actually purchase a book nor check
it out from a library to sit down and peruse it.
