Concerning using evolution as the organizing principle for teaching biology,
in the past few years I've read news stories about public disputes in Texas
and California about avoiding evolution in textbooks almost entirely.
Evolution is treated as a controversial topic with 2 sides, and minor
evolution (one species of birds becoming another based on a difference in bill
size) emphasized.  I guess the what is it? 60% 80% of the public who reject
major evolution can be comfortable with what their children are being taught.
