Re: Crazy Jessii did it again...
Jessica:
I don't think you're crazy to plan to be digging in the Gobi 12 years
from now. You'll be 27-28 years old, and if you keep yourself in shape, you
should be able to handle the physical demands of the trip. I'm much older,
and I have to get myself back into shape, and get some sort of surplus in my
bank accounts, so that I can *consider* a short dig in the Gobi (I have a
tentative invitation to go there - which I'm hoping to wrangle into a solid
invite). I'm hoping to go there by 2000. Truth be told, sand and hot hot
temperatures are NOT fun, not even for a short time (unless you really *are*
like T. E. Lawrence and fall in love with the desert - there are few people
who do - most who like it, are still cautious and respectful of it).
Obviously, sand and high heat are not the real reasons I want to go. Nor are
they the reasons I suspect most people would use - including yourself.
You'll need to keep studying, of course, especially dinosaurs. But you
may want to read up on some of the rigors of the Gobi in more detail. For
additional info and insipiration, read Micheal Novacek's "Dinosaurs of the
Flaming Cliffs". Also, several of the list members here have been to the
Gobi - Jim Kirkland, for instance, has led tours on digs in the Gobi.
You'll find that some people will think you crazy no matter what you do.
As long as you follow your dreams, and maintain some sort of sense about
you, you should fare well.
