Re: dino song
Here's a piece I wrote while prospecting along the North Bend (a Pierre
Shale locality) of the Missouri River in South Dakota, with a crew from
SDSM&T. It is sung to the tune of "The Wreck of the Elly Fitzgerald."
Enjoy.
BALLAD OF AN
EXCAVATION
By Rob Meyerson
We went up to the North Bend Shale
To try to find a piece of tail;
That would reveal the resting place
Of a Mosasaur, that lost the race.
We walked along the hills so steep,
And down in valleys, oh so deep.
We walked and walked for many an hour,
But all we saw was a radio tower.
And as we went we finally saw,
A glint of bone, perhaps a jaw.
Our excitement built as we looked to see,
"A Plesiosaur!" we said with glee.
There it was, all in a line,
Each and every piece of spine.
But, above we saw, it made us sad,
Tons of shale, above it's pad.
We started shoveling all that shale,
When arose a driving gale.
It sent us running for the cars,
We'd rendezvous, at the bars.
Next day we returned to our site,
And shoveled again with all of our might.
Soon the quarry was open wide,
Now it could no longer hide.
We worked the quarry with our picks,
How it died, we wondered for kicks.
Did it live long and die in old age,
Or was it a meal, sprinkled with sage.
Plastered and bound, removed from it's bed
Plesiosaur left, no more to be said.
Where it goes next, we do not know,
Possibly part of a fossil show.
