A virus could contribute to an extinction of a single species or even several
closely related species without actually causing the extinction itself,  by
temporarily reducing the host population so that it can't withstand a second
challenge from a different source.  But I'd be mighty skeptical of a virus
afflicting such a range of species as vanished at the K/T.  --Merritt
