institution names
"The nearest dinosaur museums to the Smithsonian are the Philadelphia
Academy of Natural Sciences (3 hours by car) and the Carnegie Museum in
Pittsburgh (5 hours by car)."
I have seen this sort of thing many times on this list. For the record,
it is the ACADEMY OF NATURAL SCIENCES OF PHILADELPHIA, sometimes
referred to as the Academy of Natural Sciences. The acronym is ANSP.
It has been the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia since 1812.
It is not:
Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences
Philadelphia Academy of Sciences
Academy of Sciences in Philadelphia
or any of the variations that I have seen mentioned
Also, technically it is "The Carnegie Museum of Natural History" as
there exist other Carnegie Museums, such as the Carnegie's art museum.
Having witnessed the discussion lately on the proper pronounciation of
dinosaur names it seemed appropriate to point out the proper names of
some of the institutions that house these dinosaurs. This point reminds
me of a memo that was passed around while I was at the Smithsonian
many years ago, informing the staff that they worked for the Smithsonian
Institution and not the Smithsonian Institute and asking them to please
get it right from now on.
