The Mammalian Time Scale of North America

Alroy has developed a whole new technique, whereby the various local
mammalian faunas from the Campanian (Late Cretaceous) to the Holocene
(right now) can be divided into various "ages" based on purely quantitative
means.

Incidentally, there was a second recipient of the Romer this year, but with
all the cheering for Alroy, I didn't hear who it was.

Another prize which was handed out that evening was the Romer-Simpson
Medal. This is the highest award in vertebrate paleontology, given to
someone who has made great contribution to our science. I'm happy to say
that the recipient of this award this year is John Ostrom, who has greatly
shaped the study of dinosaurs though a series of important studies and
discoveries.
