European colleges don't have sports teams and scholarships like in the US.
Have you looked at the tuition fees for Swiss schools?
689 francs for a semester for an undergrad, +100 if you are a foreigner at
Universität Zürich (Similar fees for ETH Zürich, U Bern, Basel, etc)
Meanwhile a year's tuition at a UC will cost over $10,000, and another $10,000
if you are from out of state.
The US education system, as with many systems in the US, does not have its
priorities straight.
Realizing this was the primary reason I decided to look abroad for further
schooling (and now I'm doing a Masters in Genetics at UZh)
However I have heard the argument that sporting events bring revenue for the
Universities, essentially taking the profits of an NFL like organization and
diverting them to academics.
I've never seen any actual numbers, so I must wonder, how much does the
University lose on these sport scholarships, and how much does it make from its
sporting events.
I suspect the sporting events are break even, or even negative when one
considers the huge sums of money spent periodically on new/refurbished
stadiums. Thus they probably don't offset the scholarship cost even slightly.
-But I have no data to back up this assertion.
