I can't speak for other Universities--and for that matter, I am only
repeating here what I have been told about University of Maryland by
administrators, as I have not checked this myself--but supposedly our
atheletics departments are financially separated from academic units. That
is, income generated from tickets sales and from alumni contributions to the
sports programs support the sports programs and the funding tracks from the
State to athletics are so designated as separate lines than the rest of
higher education. So increases or decreases in athletics income are supposed
to have zero impact on academic funding.
Or at least that's what they tell us...
