Information on Carthage College's vertebrate paleontology UG track
Greetings,
Fellow tyrant worker Thom Carr asked me to forward the following:
-------------
Dr. Thomas Carr has established a vertebrate paleontology
track for undergraduate students in the Department of
Biology at Carthage College, a private undergraduate school
located in Kenosha, between Milwaukee and Chicago. This
track is not a program - Carthage College does not offer a
degree in Vertebrate Paleontology. Students in the track
will graduate as Biology majors.
So far, the vertebrate paleontology track includes these
courses: comparative anatomy of the vertebrates, vertebrate
paleontology, dinosaur evolution and extinction, and field
techniques in vertebrate paleontology. New courses will be
added. Students are required to complete a senior thesis
project, for which Carr would serve as an enthusiastic
advisor.
Dr. Carr is involved in a partnership between Carthage
College and the Kenosha Public Museum Complex in developing
the new Dinosaur Discovery Museum in downtown Kenosha. Carr
designed the main gallery, which features theropod
evolution, from Eoraptor to modern birds. The first phase
of the main gallery opened on August 19, 2006, after Dr.
Carr returned from the field in southeastern Montana.
Paleontology track students will be involved in preparing
the bones they collected on the field in the laboratory of
the Carthage Institute of Paleontology, which is housed in
the Dinosaur Discovery Museum. High school students who are
interested in becoming vertebrate paleontologists should
consider Carthage College as an option for achieving their
goals.
