Cope's T. Rex?
In 2000, Peter Larson excavated a T. rex skeleton found on the Derflinger ranch
near the Moreau River in western South Dakota. Some of the bones were
apparently stacked and reburied, and some old metal scraps (possibly from a
wagon wheel) accompanied the fossils. Larson speculated that the specimen was
the "big dinosaur" (which he named Manospondylus gigas) reported by Cope in
1892 in the same area.
News reports in 2000 indicated that trace-elements tests etc would be done to
try to confirm whether the fossil was indeed the one discovered by Cope. But
I've been unable to find any followup info. Does anyone have further
information on this find?
