A smart tyrannosaur (if such a thing existed) might try to panic the ankylosaur
into running off a cliff to
fall to its death, or into deep water so that it drowns. That way the predator
wouldn't have to get its head
anywhere near a spiky thrashing multi-tonne prey item while it was still alive.
Even that may have been difficult to achieve if ankylosaurs reacted to large
predators by digging
themselves in and relying on their armour and spikes to defend them. Modern
echidnas use that strategy
to foil predators. Most of those predators eventually give up and leave the
echidna alone, although some
particularly clever individuals may learn how to deal with them. For the most
part the strategy works
though.
