Here's something I inadvertently left out of the Marsh 1895 quote. It's on the next page and would be interest:

In the present outline restoration of Scelidosaurus, I have Âendeavored merely to place on record my idea of the form and  position of the skeleton, when the animal was alive, based on the remains I have myself examined. In case of doubt, as, for example, in regard to the front of the skull, which is wanting in the type specimen, I have used a dotted outline, based Âon the nearest allied form. Of the dermal armor, only the row of plates best known is indicated. The position chosen in Âthis figure (Plate VI) is one that would be assumed by the animal in walking on all four feet, and this I believe to have been its natural mode of progression.  Â

Interesting. At first I was feeling paleofoolish because I have a copy of Dinosaurs of North America, but gave up wading through the thing looking for the Scelidosaurus skeletal which is nearly at the end of the massive tome because it was about the dinosaurs of N Amer duh. But had I found it would not know about the earlier publications so it all worked out in the end.Â

Thanks,Â

And in this one:

Marsh, O.C., 1895. On the affinities and classification of dinosaurian reptiles. American Journal of Science 50 (series 3), 483â498.

Hmmm... it does seem to be in this slightly older paper also:

Marsh, O.C., 1895. Restoration of some European dinosaurs with suggestions as to their place among the Reptilia. American Journal of Science 50 (series 3), 407â412.

Correct. I know it is in Marsh 1896 but do not believe it was around prior to this.

I believe it was first published in Marsh's 1896 Dinosaurs of North America, Plate LXXXIII (83):

I have not been able to track down the original reference for the classic Marsh restoration of Scelidosaurus --Âhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Scelidosaurus_skeleton.jpg

If any knows what it is please let me know.Â
