Witness to the Flood: giant salamander fossil mistaken for a human...

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/why-18th-century-naturalist-believed-hed-discovered-eyewitness-biblical-flood-180973973/Â

An additional note here--the generic name Andrias Tschudi, 1837 means "image of a man" in Greek and so is a joke of sorts on the original misidentification.Â

http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.04.0057%3Aentry%3Da)ndria%2Fs

The publication of the name is a bit muddled. Tschudi had planned a monograph on the fossil Andrias (never published) and first cited the generic name in a short article in 1837 (mentioning the planned monograph) about the living Japanese salamander, which he recognized as very similar and gave the generic name Megalobatrachus (now a synonym of Andrias).
