Also, we might lack knowledge if the paper version is already out. In theory, corrected proof, volume, and paper version may be three different years, eg. 2019, 2020 & 2021. Unlikely in this specific case, but if some other paper appears in December issue, I imagine it could appear in paper early in the following year. Logically, final PDF versions, with all the dates fixed, must be prepared before they are send to the printing office, thus the ''formal'' date as acknowledged in the text, might get overdue along the way.

Formal date for most journals is regarded as the publishing of the PRINTED volume. Hence 2020.

"Formal" means what?

If you follow the link to the article, it says "Published: 31 December 2019", and then under the author's name it says "History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences volume 42, Article number: 2 (2019)".
