Re: [dinosaur] Marsh and Cope dinosaur species + Brontosaurus + Dineobellator + more

Cope's genus _Zapsalis_ was regarded as a valid genus by Larson and Currie (2013), based on the "distinct morphology" of the teeth. More recently, Currie and Evans (2019) opined that "it is conceivable that the discovery of better preserved skeletal material in the Judith River Formation of Montana could lead to the synonymy of _Saurornitholestes_ and _Zapsalis_."Â

I actually quite like the name _Zapsalis_ - it was one of Cope's more euphonious choices. From that perspective, I wouldn't mind if _Zapsalis_ became the senior synonym of _Saurornitholestes_. However, given that theropod names founded on isolated teeth have a very poor track record of enduring over time (_Troodon_, _Deinodon_, etc), I don't rate _Zapsalis_'s chances particularly highly.

Dave Hone had a tweet about how many of the dinosaur species named by Marsh and Cope remain valid.

This is a quick list from different sources of species that are widely accepted and ones that are sometimes accepted as diagnosable. I don't think I missed any...

accepted diagnosable taxa 2 as described by Cope

Camarasaurus supremus
Dryptosaurus [Laelaps] aquilunguis

+

Coelophysis bauri [with neotype specimen]

***
possibly diagnosable species 3

Dystrophaeus Âviaemalae [new material for type specimen]
Amphicoelias [?Diplodocus] altus

***
disputed status
Maraapunisaurus [Amphicoelias] fragillimus [type specimen lost]Â
