The crest of Nyctosaurus may be unusual but it's really nothing too
difficult to explain. There's no evidence of it anchoring a sail
(while crests almost certainly had some minor effect on flight, it's
now accepted that this would simply be a mechanical secondary effect
rather than a true function) and it was most probably, as several
papers have recently purported, a sexual display apparatus. Nothing
particularly out there in terms of sexual strutctures
