Speculation alert:

I wonder if the 'dainty' eating style may have been to collect shreds of flesh 
to feed hatchlings?

Then again, why not just rip the entire arm off and take it back to the nest? 
Or regurgitate partially 
digested stomach contents for the little tikes, for that matter.
