Probably not a great analogy for pachies but it should be noted that some 
modern marine teleost fish possess extremely prominent spines, horns or other 
projections at the juvenile stages that are reduced or lost in adults - eg. 
some Pterois spp (lionfish) lose the long juvie brow-horns as adults; ornate 
pipefish (Halicampus macrorhynchus) have large leaf-like flaps as juvies that 
are reduced to small flanges in adults; ocean sunfish (Molidae) are covered in 
tall fin and body spines as fry that are later resorbed. etc
