Americans' answers to a set of science knowledge questions does not score
the worst in the first world, although we are not near the top. All nations
are mediocre, with the Japanese down at the bottom
(www.nsf.gov/statistics/seind06/append/c7/at07-10.pdf). Surveys indicate that
Americans' interest in
science (or what they think is science) is about as high as that of other
first world countries. And three quarters of Americans believe in something
paranormal, have not been able to find comparable data for other countries.
