Well, you know, until a hundred thousand years ago, no modern humans existed 
to appreciate bird colors, so two thirds of the way through the current 
geological era, it's reasonable to believe that all birds were drab colored. 
;)  Why else think that 40 million years ago, birds were not colored like 
birds today?

Now, if they should find these melanocytes on other lines of dinosaurs, that 
would be excitement.   That's what I thought at first I was looking at.
