Re: Campbell's even crazier than a MANIAC? (archeopteryx
Endurance flight can be achieved without having to sustain aerobic capacity
for the entire duration of the flight, or for even a more than miniscule
fraction of it. Flap-gliding that alternates between soaring and anaerobic
burst flapping will also suffice if the interim between anaerobic bursts is
long enough to allow recovery. The same technique can be used with short
aerobic bursts in animals that do not have sufficient aerobic capacity to
flap full time. This technique is suitable for flights of 500-1000
kilometers/day.

Mike knows this but it's worth noting that power output is not the only
limiting factor on distance flight. Aerobic capacity must be sustained
for the duration as well, and it would probably behoove us to spend more
time on when the aerobica capacity for sustained edurance flight showed up
rather than
if the muscle power and lever arms were in place (flight itself it likely
to have preceeded the capacity to fly across time zones...).
