Without turning this into a debate about current wars or foreign policy, I would point out that the jihadists and their allies who blew up the Bamiyan Buddha statues would have little compunction about blowing up our natural history museums, paleontology exhibits, and systematic collections. The paleontological community probably wouldn't fare too well either.
