Excellent!  :-D  I think this probably gets across the idea 
to anyone that was of mid-teens age in 1977 very well.

The enormity of this calamity is really beyond immediate human
understanding - we can work out the kinetics, we can review films
of Hiroshima, Mt. St. Helens, the telescopic pics of Jupiter when the
comet fragments hit etc. etc.,  but those are abstracts.  
This thing fractured quartz crystals on the other side of the world -
popping an oil/tar reservoir out of Mesozoic existence was an
astronomic flick of the tail.

Please God don't smack us again before Coach K wins another national 
championship!
