The hypothesis that the Earth is expanding was relatively popular before 
subduction zones were discovered. Since then -- late 1960s or so -- it has 
been as unnecessary as the phlogiston theory. Plus, as far as I know, the 
proponents of an expanding Earth never bothered to explain where the 
additional matter was supposed to come from.

Some later versions of the hypothesis rest on the assumption that Pangaea 
had existed unchanged throughout the Earth's history till the Early 
Jurassic. This has been known to be wrong for a few decades, too: Pangea 
only formed in the Permian.
