Its also known as a vernacular name.  Often found useful when
communicating with people outside of the field - hence, "dinosaur",
"pelycosaur", "archosaur", "plesiosaur", "ichthyosaur", "mosasaur", etc....

As with all vernacular names, which "clade" it is referring to will vary
depending on context and the person using it.
