Well, of course it is not news YET, since Darren's study is preliminary and not
published, and both Mickey and I have suggested it here before
(http://dml.cmnh.org/2005Jul/msg00151.html). Indeed, aside from Mickey's
clading it among the tyrants, my own general thoughts on the specific features
in common with tyrants and what I have taken to calling "despots" like *Dilong*
has led to the idea of a paraphyletic basal "Tyrannosauroidea". I thyink both
Mickey and Darren are open to this as well. Just shove various coelurids like
*Nqwebasaurus* and *Nedcolbertia* in there as well to fill it out. I imagine
the skulls of these fellows with be both slender and rather squared off. I
wrote a small discussion on this subject, here:
http://bitestuff.blogspot.com/2006/02/tyrants-despots-and-peons-update.html and
created a montage of the skulls of these "despots" to illustrate the
similarities and differences, here http://www.deviantart.com/view/28964302/ .
Anyways, those are my plugs for the year.
Cheers,
