Malaria's the biggest morbid and mortal malady for humans,
no doubt it takes a large toll on birds, too.

That's the much-dreaded "blackwater fever" which was almost always fatal before modern antimalarial drugs. I fully agree about the badness of malaria which is a much worse killer than HIV, though it gets very little publicity.
