I think you may possibly be confusing your story with the account of  E D 
Cope mistakenly mounting the skull of a plesiosaur at the end of a caudal 
series rather than attaching it to the cervicals ( nothing at all to do with 
a sauropod ).  Subsequently O C Marsh commented on Cope's error and thus 
began the historically  famous feud and rivalry between the two 
paleontologists.
