I think you may possibly be confusing your story with the account of E D Cope mistakenly mounting the skull of a plesiosaur at the end of a caudal series rather than attaching it to the cervicals ( nothing at all to do with a sauropod ). Subsequently O C Marsh commented on Cope's error and thus began the historically famous feud and rivalry between the two paleontologists.

I've heard alot of different versions of a story about a "brontosaur"
skeleton that was mistakenly mounted with the head attached to the
tail instead of the neck. Does anyone know if there's some true
incident behind this, or whether it's just an urban legend.
