I don't believe that David intended to describe full submergence. I had the impression that he was describing a sequence where the head and much of the neck were submerged, while the torso and hind limbs were floating, and the front legs were submerged. Jim

I can imagine it poling; but I can't imagine it submerging without quite some effort.
