Having excavated a stegosaurus including the plates,
it would appear the plates are much too fragile for
defense unless (1) they increase the size of the beast
to deter predators or (2) they would serve as a line
of defense as the predator bit into one and only
received crunchy bone, gristle and skin (and maybe a
bad taste?) that would tend to deter any other
aggressive behavior. The spikes, however, could do
some damage.
