Re: Falcarius utahensis
Very interesting animal. Pneumatic quadrate, posterior tympanic recess
opening in the otic recess, downturned paroccipital processes, dentary not
downturned, no interdental plates, seemingly long tail, unshortened distal
caudals, proximal caudal centra with rectangular sections, anteriorly
bifurcated chevrons...
So I added it to my analysis.
Here's a 90% majority rule consensus of the first 64610 mpt's. Other
updates since last time (http://dml.cmnh.org/2004Oct/msg00160.html)
include...
- added IVPP V11309 (the supposed long-tailed pygostyled bird), BPV-112 (a
supposed Chinese caenagnathid from Lu's thesis), NXMV (a Chinese oviraptorid
from Lu's thesis), Mei, Jinfengopteryx and Vescornis.
- new data for Megaraptor (Calvo et al., 2005), Nothronychus (Kirkland et
al., 2005), and oviraptorosaurs (Lu, 2004).
- combined Caudipteryx specimens (since most sources don't indicate which
specimens they refer to).
Not really too much work for seven months, but class and relationships have
kept me busy.

The mess between carnosaurs and tyrannoraptorans is cleaning up, with only
basal tyrannosaurs, two coelurids and Therizinosaurus left there. Avimimus
is back to Oviraptorosauria, but Parvicursor's still stuck as an
ornithuromorph. Among newly out-of-place taxa are Pelecanimimus as an
alvarezsaur, and "Grusimimus" as a basal maniraptoran.
The new remains shove Megaraptor down by carnosaurs. Falcarius is placed as
expected, and seems to have polarized segnosaurs a bit, letting
Beipiaosaurus be basal to other therizinosauroids. Note Protarchaeopteryx
is the most basal segnosaur here, though with Incisivosaurus the most basal
oviraptorosaur, they are still very closely related. Oviraptorosaurs are
finally organized somewhat stereotypically, with Incisivosaurus basal to
Caudipteryx, Nomingia outside Oviraptoridae, and Oviraptor more basal than
short-mandibled oviraptorids. Jinfengopteryx and Mei are basal troodontids.
Dromaeosaurs are oddly inserted as basal ornithurines (sensu lato).
Vescornis is a basal pygostylian, by Jibeinia from the same locality.
I ended up deleting many of the same taxa as before from the tree to
stabilize it...
- Calamosaurus was a basal coelurosaur.
- Richardoestesia was a basal tyrannosauroid.
- Itemirus was a dromaeosaurine.
- Pyroraptor was a basal dromaeosaur.
- Variraptor was sister to Falcarius (only the holotype was used, though
Rauhut (2003) did suggest a referred specimen was oviraptorosaurian based on
the double pleurocoels and resemblence to Chirostentes; Falcarius also has
double pleurocoels...).
