At Gila National Forest, New Mexico I read a bulletin posted about
dealing with bears that recommended actually fighting back if you are
attacked and cannot get away. I guess the reasoning is that bears are
lazy and may not take on a large animal if it looks like it's going to
cause any trouble. (Incidentally, this is the exact same advice I've
seen given for dealing with rapists.)
